Musically is probably where “Not Afraid” stands out the most. The style falls somewhere in the realm of 90’s garage rock and grungy indie rock. A pounding drum beat accompanies a more gentle guitar for the verses and a heavy grunge melody for the chorus. It’s clear that Vagabond Flag is a solid guitar player, and the work on this song (including the solo, which is a feature that’s conspicuously absent from many songs these days) makes me excited to hear more from the upcoming album. The music here isn’t the most complex or technically impressive, but the way it recalls its roots, specifically bands like Pixies and Radiohead, makes it a refreshing listen.
